AI models are deployed to optimise parameters that maximise their objective function. For example, in finance, an AI model could be deployed to maximise the rate of return for an investment portfolio.

The circle around the lambda function depicts security, safety, and governance. It represents humanity’s existential need to ensure humans always maintain secure control over an AI model’s objective function. If at any point an AI model is able to self-govern or override its objective function, then AI runs the risk of going rogue to the detriment of humanity.

Managing such risks requires a deep understanding of advanced computational mathematics, AI model architecture, objectives functions, training data accuracy and quality, explainability, transparency, lifecycle management, but above all governance and control.
